Working for Free to Get Ahead

Maybe you don’t have time to work while you’re in school. Maybe you just can’t find the right job. Don’t sweat it: hit the books and earn your 4.0. But don’t become one of the thousands of new graduates with no work experience at all! Strategically planning your extracurricular activities might help your job search when you’re finished with school. Here are four activities to get into while you’re in school that can carry you into any job.

1.       Student government: Being a class president has its perks (fame, eternal glory, popularity) but it also might help your job campaign. Being a class president shows leadership ability. Serving as class treasurer proves your trustworthiness and math abilities.

2.       Athletics: Not everyone can be a first-round draft pick, but even intramural sports demonstrate your ability to work well on a team. Having a great relationship with your coach can earn you a glowing recommendation or reference.

3.       Volunteer organizations: Many schools (high school and college) require students to complete some level of community service to graduate. Even if social activism isn’t your thing, there are a ton of organizations, like the SPCA and 4-H. Not only will it make you a great person, it will give you the tools you need to be successful in the job market. A proven track record with most volunteer organizations is as good as a for-pay job in terms of work experience.

4.       Work with children: If management or education are in your future, working with children of any age is a good place to start. Working with the YMCA or at the Boys & Girls Club will hone your abilities to supervise large groups. This challenging volunteer experience will help you stand out in the crowd of job seekers.
